Oh, the Places You'll Go

"In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn"-Phil Collins
I love this quote because you learn things that you didn't know or ever thought of when teaching. Children end up teaching you things that you didn't know so it's a learning process for you and the child.

Dr. Seuss books are my absolute favorite but I love his book "Oh, the Places You'll Go". I love this book because it gives children a chance to just wonder the places they will go in life. I believe it opens up there imagination as does the rest of Dr. Seuss books.

  1. Brittany,

From your quote to your book selection, I agree. When I read your quote I had to remember the reason I became a teacher. Each day I spend in meaningful conversation with a four year old. Parents will come to me and ask, "What happened to my child yesterday?" I look at the child and ask, "What happened?" The child answers in detail. If we take the time to listen and interact with children, we teach and learn. I agree.
Your book selection I love, because yes Dr. Seuss opens the possibilities. As a Minister I also combined a spiritual thought, in the bible 1Corinthians 2:9 "Eyes have not seen, nor ears have hears the plans (possibilities) God has in store...." Being open to the possibilities is what I desire for everyone, young and seasoned.

  2. Brittany,
I love the quote you selected to share. I truly believe that in teaching others, we will inevitably learn along the way. In my brief experience (just shy of 3 months) teaching in a Head Start classroom in Florida, I learned so much about myself not only on a professional level, but also a personal level. I had traveled way outside my comfort zone, as I had moved from a predominately white Michigan community to a predominately Hispanic community. Not only was I one of the only two white people on staff, but I couldn't speak a bit of Spanish. Fortunately, to my surprise, there were very few moments where I felt as if I were an outsider. I was welcomed with open arms by the staff, parents, and the children. Although it was disconcerting to take a leap of faith to close down my own program I ran for 15 years, move to another state to take a teaching job, only to return to Michigan jobless a few short months later, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. The professional growth I experience would have been worth it all on its on, so the personal growth was just icing on the cake. Thanks for sharing your quote with the rest of us.
