When I Think Of Child Development

"Children must be taught how to think, not what to think." –Margaret Mead

"Children aren't coloring books. You don’t get to fill them with your favorite colors." –Khaled Hosseini

"Your kids require you most of all to love them for who they are, not to spend your whole time trying to correct them."-Bill Ayers

Testing for Intelligence?

Assessing the “whole child” should be used as just that because multiple testing should be done. A child can’t be assessed just by an IQ test because it’s just standardized. There are many debates about standardized testing in the United States. When the no child left behind act was passed it required annual testing. In Australia they use the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children which are used on children from ages six through sixteen. Australian Standardization (WISC-IV) is an individually administered instrument for assessing the cognitive ability of children aged 6 years to 16 years (Bloom). The WISC-IV is one of the most reliable and valid IQ testing instruments available. It is the most widely used measure of IQ for school placement (Bloom).
For children under 6 years: The Wechsler Preschool & Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI-III) is an individually administered instrument for assessing the cognitive ability of children aged 2.5 years and 7 years (Bloom). As with the WISC-IV, the WPPSI-II is one of the most reliable and valid IQ testing instruments available (Bloom).
The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-II) assesses academic achievement skills in children from the age of 4 years (Bloom). Key subtests include spelling, word reading and numerical operations (Bloom).

  Key Benefits of a WISC Assessment

The main benefits include:
·        * Early identification of reading & learning issues;
·        * Useful in identifying learning disabilities;
·        * Understanding of an individual’s learning profile;
·        * Identification of gifted children;
·       *  The assessment also helps Schools make appropriate; accommodations and develop learning plans for individual students;
and
·      *   The ability to determine learning processes, which include both strengths and weaknesses and the impact that they might have on individual student performance.

Consequences of Stress on Children's Development

On September 16, 1999 hurricane Floyd hit Greenville, North Carolina flooding mostly everything in sight. This hurricane was the biggest we had ever seen and displaced over 4,000 people. As a child I wasn’t gravely affected by this but my cousin was. I was only eleven years old but I remember like it was yesterday. The flood spread throughout over half of Greenville and destroyed many homes. My cousin had to live with my family and I for a year. His family lost everything so they had to start over from scratch. He had many issues and didn’t deal with this every well because he had no clothes, shoes, or a place to call home. He started getting into trouble because of this stress but eventually calmed down. FEMA and the Red Cross stepped in to help and the city as a whole pulled together during this tragic time.

Poverty is a major stressor for children in Africa and they suffer from malnutrition as well. They have numerous of ways to help with these stressors dealing with children such as sponsoring a child and send items over to help. Most people donate money to help children in Africa and clean drinking water. I feel as though more should be done for them because children die daily over there due lack of food and clean water.

Child Development and Public Health

SIDS is important to me because I work in an infant room and parents are always asking us to put their child on their stomachs. The parents know about SIDS but they always say their child sleeps best that way and I have to explain that we as childcare workers aren’t allowed to let them sleep on their stomach if the child rolls on their stomach their self then its fine. I also chose this topic because I person that I knew lost her child to SIDS when he was three months and she blames herself for his death. Parents need to be more educated about this because we say this could never happen to our child. In 2010 this was considered to be the third leading cause of death among infants.
Each year in the United States, about 4,000 infants die suddenly of no immediately, obvious cause (center for disease control and prevention). Compared to other developing countries the United States has the highest rate for SIDS. For example, in 2005, the U.S. rate ranked second highest (after New Zealand) among 13 countries in a research study by Fern Hauck and Kawai Tanabe (national SUID/SIDS Resource Center).
These decreases range from 40% in Argentina to 86% in France (ispid.org). The highest SIDS rates in 1990 (>2.0/1000 live births) were in Ireland, New Zealand, and Scotland (ispid.org). More recently, the highest SIDS rates (>0.5/1000 live births) are in New Zealand and the United States (ispid.org). The lowest rates (<0.2/1000) are in Japan and the Netherlands (ispid.org). My plans for the future are to open my childcare center and inform parents along with caregivers about SIDS and how they can help. I would love to start teaching the trainings for this class as well to empower other childcare givers.

Childbirth

I haven't experienced childbirth yet, but I was there when I friend went into labor with her son. Her water broke at around 4 in the morning and she went to the hospital they told her she was 7 centimeters dilated. They gave her and epidural for the pain and she needed up having a c-section because the baby's heart rate was dropping. To me this was a crazy experience because she hoping to push her baby out but couldn't. In China they expect you to drink strong herbal tea for the pain, there customs dictates that women should fear birth since it's considered a woman's career. They don't use a hospital bed, traditionally they give birth in an armchair or a futon. The Chinese traditions are totally different from American traditions.

Examining Codes of Ethics

NAEYC
I-1.1—To be familiar with the knowledge base of early childhood care and education and to stay informed through continuing education and training.

This is meaningful to me because I feel that as a teacher you must stay up to date about things going in the education. Every day something changes in education and as teachers we must stay informed. In the childcare field things change constantly and if you are not aware of it you could get in trouble with licensing.

I-1.12—To work with families to provide a safe and smooth transition as children and families move from one program to the next.

To me this means that you must a reassure your families that their next teacher is just as wonderful as you are. Many parents are unsure what to expect about their child’s next class but we must reassure them their child will be safe and will progress fine.

DEC(code of ethics)
Professional and Interpersonal Behavior
-We shall serve as advocates for children with disabilities and their families and for the professionals who serve them by supporting both policy and programmatic decisions that enhance the quality of their lives.

This is meaningful to me because we must advocate for all children especially children with disabilities because if we don’t they will slip through the cracks. They deserve the same education as other children and should be treated the same. If we don’t advocate for children then who will because education is always the first cut in government.

Personal Childhood Web

My mother is kind and nurturing woman who will help my brothers and I anyway possible. She has always been there for me when I needed her. As a child growing up she showed me what unconditionally love is and the meaning of hard work. Although there were three of us she always did special things with us, I had a mommy and me day. My mother is one of my biggest inspirations and my cheerleader because she encourages me to follow my dreams.

My great grandmother was like another mother to me because she helped raise me along with my mother. When I needed someone to talk to she was always there for me no matter the situation. She always instilled in me that education was important and never let anybody tell you that they are better than you. My mother and great-grand mother are my best friends and wouldn't trade them for anything in the world. Although she has passed away I still remember telling me never let anyone stop you from achieving your dreams.

This is my aunt she has been there for me since I was born. She never had children so she treated all her nieces and nephews as her own. I considered her to be the cool aunt who you can always talk to without telling your mother. She always has given me advice and told me the truth even when I didn't want to hear it.

This lady right here is one of my other mother’s who had a hand in raising me. She never had a daughter so said I was. Anything I could ever ask for she tried to get it and when I needed something she was always there. She has always told me I could do anything I just have to set my mind and put God first in anything I do.

This is my aunt Linda she is a very strong willed woman who doesn't take any mess. She was very stern with me and always made sure respected others. She taught me how to stand up for myself and showed me how to cook. She was very loving and nurturing to me growing up, she still shows me that same love today.

Oh, the Places You'll Go

"In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn"-Phil Collins
I love this quote because you learn things that you didn't know or ever thought of when teaching. Children end up teaching you things that you didn't know so it's a learning process for you and the child.

Dr. Seuss books are my absolute favorite but I love his book "Oh, the Places You'll Go". I love this book because it gives children a chance to just wonder the places they will go in life. I believe it opens up there imagination as does the rest of Dr. Seuss books.

Welcome! I'm new to this but I find it very interesting and eager to learn how it works. I am currently attending Walden University for my master's in Early Childhood Education with a specialization in Administration, Management, and Leadership. I am ready to start my journey.
